IN PROGRESS

THE T-SPOON CAFE

BOX HILL, NSW

The concept explores the notion of revival through the rebirthing of nature within a contemporary context.

Approaching from Mason Rd, the entrance encapsulates a corridor view of round reflective panels, suspending from the ceiling. LED strip lighting surround the glass mirror panels, highlighting these floating archipelago-like panels hanging from various height.

Overgrowing green moss can be seen protruding from the ceiling, breaking out of existing columns, and walls. Upon entering, a combination of smooth white stone with prismatic textured panels, glass and timber, wraps around the café counter. Natural light dances off the patterns of the prismatic panel, creating a dapple-like effect across the entrance of the café.

A root-like feature provides support for the seating/table surrounding the two columns. It sprouts from black concrete floor with crisp white contours formed by stencil patterns. The internal finishes are neutral; floors and walls are black and white, fittings are a mixture of smooth and textured glass, warmed with a hint of timber. A palette that ensures an organic greyscale patina over time.

The organic ribbons of the interior acts as a medium to express the resurgent appreciation of nature amidst a global pandemic. The greatest impact the pandemic has created is the absence of socialisation. The architectural forms created within this café urges for the opportunity to enact the rebirth of socialisation.
