LUXE CAFE

GREEN SQUARE, NSW

In the suburb of Green Square, amid its tree-lined streets adjoined with quaint terrace houses and worker cottages, lies a small haven of handcrafted breads and pastries, and velvet-like coffees. This 60-square meter venue will be Luxe’s fifth café location, at street level under Mirvac’s apartment residences, Ovo at Portman Place.

Our design outlook for the bakery-café was one that was multi-dimensional and hybrid in nature. This notion can be seen through the use of materials, the custom forms of structures, and the zoning of spaces.

A subtle brutalism-art-deco hybrid can be seen at street view, a continuity of fluid block forms from outside to inside. The custom front counter bench panel is a fusion of marble-like stone, brushed brass strips, fluted timber, and glass. This hybrid of materials is replicated on the standing counter inside, which connects strips of brushed brass on the wall to the concrete-like floor.

Running across the interior feature wall, these fluid brass strips were originally inspired by Luxe’s philosophy: “handmade with heart”. Printed in cursive, on the back wall, their philosophy is subtly accompanied by a partial brass outline of a heart. The fluted feature, which could be seen on the interior forms continues to the outdoor concrete/stone barrier, draws distinction between the adjoining old-fashioned worker cottages and the modern apartment complex above.

A timeless design that gracefully contours between the old and the new of this newly developed suburb.
